Separate four independent requirements
Confirm width and height, format, minimum size and maximum size with the destination. This fictional exercise uses 300×400 pixels, JPEG and 0–200 KiB; it is not an institutional standard. Pixel dimensions are not byte size, and renaming does not change encoding. Background, pose and clarity require separate inspection.
Practice composition with the sample
Download the 600×600 sample PNG of colored geometry. It is not an ID photo. Enter width 300, height 400, JPEG, KiB, minimum 0 and maximum 200. Compare Crop to fill, which removes side edges, with Keep whole image, which adds padding. Do not submit this practice image to a real registration system.
Understand cropping, padding and background
Both fit modes preserve proportions. Crop to fill meets dimensions but may remove text or the edge of a head; use the position sliders to choose the retained area. Keep whole image preserves the original with padding, which the destination might reject. Fill color affects padding and transparency, not an existing photo background.
Check pixels, format and exact bytes
Expect a 300×400 JPEG of at most 204800 bytes. A 200 KB limit is 200000 bytes, 4800 fewer than 200 KiB. Use the exact byte count rather than a rounded file-manager value. Encoder quality percentage is not a clarity score: inspect the image itself.
Adjust without breaking the requirements
If too large, try JPEG/WebP or a more suitable original only if allowed; do not reduce mandatory dimensions. PNG has no lossy quality control. Below the minimum, verify the rule and try PNG or a more detailed original. The tool does not pad with meaningless bytes. Reopen the downloaded file and verify with the destination.
